The Science of Colour - The Object.

Exploring the world of color science has been quite the journey, and I'm excited to share regular updates on various aspects of color, from the physics behind it to the fundamentals of what color truly is, and even the secrets of color coding. Stay tuned for an array of colorful discoveries!

Now, let's dive into the realm of the second part of the color triad—the object.

When light interacts with an object, it embarks on a captivating dance. The object selectively absorbs some wavelengths of light while reflecting others. It's this reflective dance that paints the object in the colors we perceive.

For instance, picture a vibrant red apple. It's not hiding the color red within itself; instead, it's a reflection of light. This apple absorbs all the wavelengths except those within the red spectrum, casting a crimson hue for us to admire. So, you see, the apple's surface becomes a canvas, playing with light to show us its true colors. White objects happily reflect all wavelengths, while black objects, like a magician, absorb them all, warming up in the process.

It's the art of selective light absorption that shapes our perception of color. The more light an object absorbs, the less vivid the resulting color.

Every object or surface has its own unique characteristics that choreograph this display of light. Opaque objects absorb and reflect light in equal proportions. Transparent objects allow light to pass through, while translucent ones let the light through but with scattering. Even the material of an object takes center stage in this performance. High-gloss items, like divas of the color world, reflect more light, resulting in a vibrant and intense appearance. Contrast and shadows also have a turn in the spotlight. Depending on the object's position and the play of shadows, we see the most radiant side, touched by light, and the opposite side, cloaked in darkness. This, too, is a testament to reflected light.

Now, when it comes to the marvelous world of fabrics, there are a number of variables that affect the color of the final masterpiece. Fiber variability, yarn and fabric construction, and the techniques used in fabric processing all join together to enhance the color. For instance, fibers possess unique characteristics like cross-sectional shape, fineness, surface texture, and affinity for, or resistance to dyes, which all sway the apparent color of the final product. Fabrics, like seasoned performers, absorb and reflect light in their own distinct ways, giving rise to the colors that captivate us.

So, when we embark on a creative journey in quilting, let's not forget that the fabrics we choose are like partners in a color dance. Each fabric, with its distinctive texture and reflective qualities, affects how colors shine and interact. Satin may twirl with light, creating a luminous effect, while matte fabrics might prefer to embrace the light, casting a softer, more muted charm. Don't hesitate to explore the variety of fabric finishes and textures to uncover the magic they bring to your palette of colors. After all, in the world of quilting, it's not just about colors; it's about the dance they create together! 🌈💃✨

Happy Quilting
